Teh tarik (literally “pulled tea”) is a popular, frothy milk tea that serves as the unofficial national drink of Malaysia and is widely beloved across Singapore, Indonesia, and Brunei. It is made from strong black tea blended with sweetened condensed milk and sometimes evaporated milk. The expression teh tarik is composed of the Malay words for “tea” (teh) and “pulled” (tarik), and can be translated as “pulled tea”.
Ingredients
- Strong black tea: A robust variety like Ceylon or Assam is preferred. Traditionally, “tea dust” (a lower grade of tea leaves) was used for its strong flavor.
- Sweetened condensed milk: The primary sweetener and a key component for the drink’s creamy texture.
- Evaporated milk (optional): Sometimes added to boost creaminess without adding more sweetness.
- Boiling water: To brew the tea.
